Labor’s rugby promise not so Bright
The Weatherill Labor Government has broken yet another promise, this time to southern suburbs residents over sport club funding.
When questioned in Parliament today about whether or not the Weatherill Labor Government promised $1 million in funding to the Brighton Rugby Club before the State Election, Minister for Recreation and Sport, Leon Bignell said:
“No, the government did not promise $1 million of funding to the Brighton rugby club.”
(Hansard, 20/05/14)
However, in a letter to the Brighton Rugby Club on 14 March 2014, then Labor Member for Bright, Chloe Fox said:
A Labor government would commit to a funding model wherein $1 million would be provided.”
Upon further questioning, Minister Bignell then stated:
The former member for Bright was not the minister responsible for that portfolio area, and I gave no such promise.” (Hansard, 20/05/14)
The Weatherill Labor Government was then unable to guarantee that this promise would be honoured, with Treasurer Koutsantonis stating:
You will have to wait until the budget…”  (Hansard, 20/05/14)
“Once again we have another example of the Weatherill Labor Government saying one thing and doing another,” said Liberal Member for Bright David Speirs.
“Mr Weatherill and Labor must honour its election promise to the people of Bright.
“South Australians living in Adelaide’s southern suburbs have been treated with contempt by the Weatherill Labor Government for 12 long years and they deserve better.”
