SA’s alarming road toll

The Productivity Commission’s Report on Government Services has today revealed that South Australia recorded the second highest road death rate in the nation in 2015, only behind the Northern Territory.

South Australia recorded 82.4 (deaths per million people) compared with the national figure of 52.9; only the Northern Territory (192.1) with its unique road safety issues was higher.

“The Weatherill Government’s failure to adequately maintain South Australia’s extensive road network is a contributing factor to the shocking number of fatalities on our roads,” said Shadow Minister for Road Safety Stephan Knoll.

“The Civil Contractors’ Federation have previously estimated that South Australia has a $1 billion road maintenance backlog.

“There is currently $13 million of speeding fine revenue sitting idle in State Government coffers that should have been invested in improving South Australia’s road infrastructure.

“Speed camera revenue has increased relentlessly under the Labor Government and rather than topping up the Weatherill Government’s bottom line that money should be directed straight back into road safety initiatives.

“Road maintenance is absolutely critical to making our roads safer to travel on in an effort to reduce the level of road trauma.

“The State Liberals have pledged to double State Black Spot road funding.”
