Parliamentary Committee visits Port Augusta Prison

The Parliamentary Committee looking into the state’s prisons system will today visit the Port Augusta Prison, for a first-hand tour of the facilities.

The Select Committee on the Administration of South Australia’s Prisons is conducting a comprehensive inquiry into SA’s prisons. Issues specific to Port Augusta include:

• Two prisoners tunnelling under a prison fence and gaining access to a prohibited area at Port Augusta Prison, then starting a truck with the intention of driving it through a perimeter fence, and, when noticed, held officers at bay within the prohibited area for four hours;

• A seven-hour siege at Port Augusta Prison; and

• The delay to the expansion of the Port Augusta Prison

“Port Augusta is a key part our state’s prisons system, so it’s important that Members of this Parliamentary Committee actually visit the Prison and see for themselves the issues at that site,” said Shadow Minister for Correctional Services Stephan Knoll.

“Last month we learned that the prisons capacity crisis here in SA will worsen, as the prison population explodes by 300 to 3,568 prisoners by 2021-22, without anywhere for these additional prisoners to be accommodated.

“The Weatherill Labor Government has failed to adequately plan to avoid this capacity crisis in our prison’s system, and the delay to the expansion of Port Augusta Prison is just part of that picture.

“Prison overcrowding has contributed to an increase in violence in our prisons and this puts extra pressure on Correctional Services Officers, who deserve a safe workplace.

“The Government must come clean on what its plan is to address the issues at Port Augusta and right across the state’s prisons system.

“The State Labor Government’s failed ‘rack ‘em, pack ‘em and stack ‘em’ policy is coming home to roost. The Government had a plan for a good sound bite but no plan on what to do after that.”
