Frontline Police Officers critical of Government’s cuts

The Weatherill Labor Government’s decision to slash the opening hours of police stations has been slammed by police officers on the frontline.

The controversial changes to the opening hours of nine stations across the metro area have resulted in increased workloads and poorer conditions for staff, along with a reduced service for the community.

“This disastrous decision has not only resulted in increased workloads for station staff, but has also placed the safety of the community at unnecessary risk,” said Shadow Minister for Police Stephan Knoll.

“When there are serving police officers saying ‘no, the changes to police station opening hours have not been successful’, you know the Weatherill Labor Government has got it wrong.

“It’s unacceptable to hear about members of the public lining up out the door of stations, waiting more than an hour to report an incident.

“Minister Malinauskas needs to explain what workforce planning and resourcing work was completed prior to the changes being implemented, as it has come to light that members of the public are often turned away when their incident report can’t be completed before the station closes – an utterly ridiculous situation.

“The Weatherill Labor Government has also botched the communication of these opening hours changes, with police reporting that members of the public often present to 24-hour stations as they don’t know where their nearest police station is, or when it is open.

“These changes have had a real impact on the service that the community expects, particularly when you consider that SAPOL employees are saying that members of the public simply attend the closest 24/7 police station when their local station is closed, increasing the workloads of staff.

“The public expects and deserves a strong police presence in their local area, which includes a physical police shop-front to service their needs. The Weatherill Labor Government’s decision to slash police station opening hours has been a complete failure.”

The State Liberals have previously committed to reinstating the opening hours of the Henley Beach police station, as there is a clear need for a physical police shop-front to be open beyond daytime hours, in the popular entertainment precinct.
