Time for Labor to back SA jobs with Government Procurement

An analysis of the SA Government Tenders and Contracts website has revealed that almost $300 million in Government work has been sent to companies outside of South Australia since January 2015.

“Premier Weatherill needs to explain why his Government continually awards contracts to interstate and overseas companies,” said Parliamentary Secretary for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Business Start-Up Vincent Tarzia.

“It is completely unacceptable that almost $300 million in Government work has been awarded to companies outside of South Australia since January 2015.

“The Weatherill Labor Government should be backing South Australian businesses instead of sending work interstate and overseas.

“The poor economic climate created by the Weatherill Labor Government has hit small businesses hard, as evidenced by the recent CommSec’s State of the States January 2016 report.

“South Australia's small business sector has the lowest confidence in the nation and South Australia continues to have the worst unemployment rate in the nation.

“The State Liberals understand that supporting local businesses will help keep thousands of South Australians employed – the Weatherill Labor Government does not.

“The Weatherill Labor Government must give SA businesses a fair go and provide local businesses with support to encourage them to bid for contracts and find out about tendering opportunities.”
