Marine Park fight continues
A boat graveyard at Port Wakefield awaits holidaymakers heading to the Yorke Peninsula today.
The protest has been organised by residents and fisherman at Port Wakefield who continue to fight the Weatherill Government’s controversial no-take zones in marine parks.
Liberal frontbenchers Vickie Chapman and Adrian Pederick are supporting the protest and want people driving past to take note.
“The Weatherill Government’s plan to ban fishing and recreation in areas such as Port Wakefield will crush coastal communities,” Ms Chapman said.
“Many South Australians would not be aware of the impact the no-take zones will have on small coastal communities.
“However the decision to delay the implementation of the zones means the fight against Labor’s plan is far from over.”
Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, Adrian Pederick, said South Australians would have a choice at the next election regarding marine protection.
“South Australians have a choice between a Labor Government that does not care about coastal communities and the Liberal Party which supports communities and sustainable fishing and recreation,” Mr Pederick said.
“It’s not just the fisherman in towns like Port Wakefield that will be affected, it’s their families, small business owners and even social services like schools.
“A State Liberal Government will remove Labor’s no-take zones and properly assess fisheries on a threat based management strategy if elected in 2014.”
