Chaos for motorists and commuters on South Road

The State Liberals today called for the damaged South Road Tram Overpass and subsequent disruptive South Road closure to be examined by Parliament’s Public Works Committee.
“The Public Works Committee should investigate whether inspections of the bridge were being carried out appropriately, and whether the builder was at fault,” said Shadow Minister for Transport and Infrastructure David Pisoni.
“This can’t be left to Minister Mullighan – his track record on investigating breakdowns and faults in deplorable.
“The investigation into last year’s Seaford rail disruption took nine months and was inconclusive.”
Peak-hour traffic chaos engulfed Adelaide motorists during this morning’s peak, as the South Road closure at the tram overpass entered a second day.
“This closure has caused absolute traffic mayhem with South Road closed between Anzac Highway and Cross Road, with other arterial roads bearing the brunt of the increased traffic,” said Mr Pisoni.
“In typical fashion, Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan has dismissed the concerns of motorists and commuters and failed to provide adequate information about the damaged bridge and when these disruptive closures will be lifted.
“These lengthy traffic delays have caused anger and frustration for road-users on their way to work this morning.
“Businesses along South Road are also suffering as they are unable to receive deliveries and customers.
“Motorists, commuters, cyclists and pedestrians have all been severely inconvenienced by the closure of one of Adelaide’s busiest stretches of road, along with access to the overpass.
“If it emerges that the bridge maintenance schedule hasn’t been strictly adhered to, there will be serious questions for the Weatherill Government to answer.”
