$10 million concessions catastrophe

The Weatherill Government’s latest IT disaster will cost taxpayers’ at least $10 million despite the fact the original budget was for just $600,000 when it was first announced in 2009.
Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion Zoe Bettison has today admitted in State Parliament that she has been forced to allocate another $2.2 million over two years to develop an IT system to manage government concession payments.
“This IT project has blown out by a staggering 1,566 per cent and there is no guarantee the cost will end there,” said Dr McFetridge, Shadow Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion.
“Today’s Budget Estimates revealed that $2.2 million has been allocated to build the new Cost of Living Concession Information (COLIN) system but the Minister had no idea about what the total cost would be.
“Given the initial CASIS IT project blew out by more than $6.5m (twelve times the cost), I have no faith that the cost of this new IT system will not also end up costing taxpayers many millions of dollars.
“The Minister failed to provide an explanation for why CASIS had so comprehensively failed or why the Weatherill Government has been so painfully slow to react to that failure.
“The Weatherill Government has a track record of wasting millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money on IT cost blow-outs whether it is TRUMPS, EPAS, Oracle, CASIS and now COLIN.
“Let’s hope we are not back next year asking questions about another Labor Government IT debacle.”
