Labor’s desal deception

The Weatherill Labor Government was aware back in May, when it announced this year’s 25 per cent increase in water prices, that the desalination plant was going to be mothballed, according to Freedom of Information documents obtained by the Liberal Opposition.

A document from the SA Water Regulation and Pricing Committee, dated 7 May 2012, two weeks before this year’s water prices were announced on 21 May 2012, indicates their business model was based on “zero water production (“mothballing”) from 1 January 2015.”

The same mothballing information was also revealed in an SA Water board meeting paper dated 21 May 2012.

The Weatherill Labor Government officially announced that Adelaide’s desalination plant would be mothballed, precisely as stated in the business model, on October 4 this year.

“This is just another example of deceit and deception from this Labor Government,” Liberal Leader Isobel Redmond said.

“Not only did the Government keep the mothballing a secret when water prices were announced in May, but they kept it a secret for another five months!

“It just shows that once again Premier Weatherill and his Labor Government cannot be trusted.

“There appears to be a concerning pattern of deceitful and deceptive behaviour from this Government, following Labor’s insistence on the most secretive ICAC in the nation, the apparent cover-up of a child sex abuse case in a western suburbs school and controversy over the appointment of Ms Mia Handshin to the board of the EPA.

“Labor must now answer:

• For how long has Labor known about the mothballing?
• Why did Labor cover up the mothballing of the desal plant when they announced this year’s water prices?
Why did Labor increase water bills to pay for the desal plant when they knew the plant wouldn’t be used?"
