SA’s NAPLAN results the worst in the nation

SA’s NAPLAN results the worst in the nation

The latest NAPLAN results released today has sadly seen South Australia remain at the bottom of the education table in Australia.
Under the Weatherill Labor Government’s leadership, South Australia’s NAPLAN results continue to be the worst of any mainland state with scores below national averages in 19 of 20 categories.
South Australia is last in 10 out of 20 categories – this is up from 7 last year and 6 in 2014.
“While some signs of improvement are welcome, it is still concerning that we are at the bottom of the pack,” said Shadow Education Minister John Gardner.
“We shouldn’t be satisfied if we are below the national average in one category – sadly we’re below the national average in 19 categories.
“The NAPLAN results show why we need the reforms that the State Liberals have proposed, such as removing Families SA from the Education Department, giving our Principals real autonomy to lead their schools; and moving Year 7 into high school where our students can get the specialist teaching instruction that the Australian Curriculum is designed for.
“Just as no two students are the same, no two schools are the same. Providing schools with more autonomy gives principals the support and flexibility required to act in the best interests of their school.
“It is no coincidence that ever since Jay Weatherill decided to merge Families SA with the Department of Education that SA has been on a downward spiral in both areas.
“Premier Weatherill’s social experiment was a distraction for education and a disaster for child protection.
“It’s time for the Government to stop accepting poor results and making excuses. Our children deserve nothing less than the best schools in Australia.
“We used to lead the nation in Education. We shouldn’t be satisfied until we do so again.”
