NAPLAN testing starts today

South Australian students will today begin their NAPLAN tests, with tens of thousands of students undertaking tests in ‘Language conventions’ and ‘Writing’.

‘Reading’ tests are on Wednesday, with ‘Numeracy’ on Thursday.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy And Numeracy (NAPLAN) provides nationally consistent tests to all students across Australia. It is a useful tool in helping identify students who may need extra support, as well as providing a timely check on how our school system is going as a whole.

“NAPLAN is a great check for our education system, but it’s important that students and parents don’t go into the tests stressing about how well they’re going to do as individuals,” said Shadow Minister for Education John Gardner.

“The tests are also a great opportunity for parents to engage in their child’s educational progress and identify how they’re going in the critically important areas of literacy and numeracy.

“Unfortunately, South Australia has fallen to the back of the class, where we used to lead the nation in education standards. Our ambition must be to have the best education system in the country.

“The State Liberals hope to see significant improvement on results from recent years. Last year we were either last or second last of all the states in 18 out of 20 categories.

“The State Liberals have already released a number of policies geared towards improving our education system, including packages of measures to tackle chronic truancy, and improve parental engagement with schools.

“We have also argued for many years that we need to transition Year 7 into High School.”
