Mothers wait an eternity for maternity funds

More than two years have passed since Health Minister Hill announced $3.5 million would be made available for the expansion of the Mt Barker and District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Maternity section.

The maternity ward is at capacity and mothers are being forced to travel to the city to give birth whilst they wait for the promised expansion to get underway.

“On the 21st of April 2010 Health Minister Hill made a commitment to Adelaide Hills residents that services at the maternity section of Mt Barker Hospital would be expanded,” Liberal Member for Kavel Mark Goldsworthy said.

“Despite renewing that commitment over the past two years expectant mothers are being forced to travel to Adelaide to have their children.

“Minister Hill needs to focus on fulfilling his promise to the people of Mt Barker and districts and not simply try to squeeze every inch of political capital out of a two year old announcement.

“Given the continual need for infrastructure development and the provision of services in the hills district, the Minister has to honour his commitment to the community and provide the promised funds for improvement of services at the Mt Barker Hospital in the budget to brought down this Thursday’ Mark Goldsworthy said.

“The district has had enough of being ignored by this government”.
