Agriculture opportunity for KI

The collapse of timber company Gunns may well be an opportunity for  increased agriculture on Kangaroo Island if current blue gum plantations are put up for sale by the administrators, according to Liberal Member for Finniss Michael Pengilly.

“10,730 hectares of prime high rainfall country are under blue gum forestry on the island with little real hope of a lot ever being harvested,” Mr Pengilly said.

“If a scheme could be devised to purchase and return the land to agricultural production the island community would be far better served.

“Whilst ownership and other matters need to be resolved there is a strong need to reinvest capital into the land and produce food and fibre for the world.

“This is an opportunity to restore productivity to the west end of the island, the benefits of which could then freely flow to local schools, sports clubs, and local business.”
