Weatherill playing politics with SA’s water future

Premier Weatherill and Water Minister Caica have continued to play politics with the River Murray, instead of working with the MDBA to develop a Basin Plan that works for South Australia.

“The Labor Government was offered a seat at the table in the development of the Basin Plan, but they refused and insisted on pushing for an allocation of 4,000GL,” Liberal Leader Isobel Redmond said.

Yet while representing South Australia at the Murray Darling Basin Ministerial Council last month, Minister Caica signed off on a consensus view that accepted a range of between 2,400GL and 3,200GL which formed the basis of the latest iteration of the plan!

“Premier Weatherill must come out and explain whether or not he now accepts the latest MDBA plan,” Ms Redmond said.

“If he does not support this new plan, then he must explain why his Minister signed off on the consensus view.”

“The issue of the River Murray should be well above politics. Instead Premier Weatherill and his government have used the issue to talk tough but have achieved nothing,” Shadow Water Minister Mitch Williams said.

“The Government has obviously decided that it can get more political mileage by continuing the 120 years of bickering that has prevented win/win outcomes for the Murray.

“Premier Weatherill is part of the problem not part of the solution.”
