Liberal Opposition moves Bill to remove exit fees

The State Liberals have today moved a Bill to remove exit fees for customers wanting to change electricity retailers.

“In August I announced my intention to move this Bill in the House of Assembly,” Shadow Minister for Energy Mitch Williams said.

“The Bill, if passed, will remove exit fees for customers wanting to change electricity retailers in the case where the retailer has put up their electricity prices higher than the regulated increase.

“While South Australia does have one of the most competitive electricity markets, householders still have to pay exit fees if they want to break their retail contracts when their retailers put up prices above regulated increases.

“Since I first announced that we would be introducing this legislation the Labor Government has said that they will be looking at abolishing exit fees, but we are yet to see any action being taken.

“Once again we have another example of the Weatherill Labor Government making promises and delivering nothing – Minister Koutsantonis and his Government promised to do something about electricity prices while making no real effort to get anything done.

“The State Liberals recognise that skyrocketing electricity prices are hurting South Australian families and businesses and we are taking action to help.

“I certainly hope that the Labor Party supports my Bill.”
