Still in the dark on Port Lincoln power failure

With the Eyre Peninsula subject to repeated power black-outs the Member for Flinders Peter Treloar is calling on power company ENGIE to guarantee its back-up generators in Port Lincoln are fit for use.

“I’m still yet to receive a satisfactory response as to why Port Lincoln’s back-up generators failed during the state-wide blackout in late September,” said Mr Treloar.

“I’m disappointed that neither the Weatherill Government nor ENGIE have come forward to explain why the back-up generation in Port Lincoln failed and what has been done to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“There have been repeated power failures across the Eyre Peninsula since that state-wide blackout and I’m concerned that Port Lincoln may again be plunged into darkness despite having back-up generators.

“Most of Eyre Peninsula doesn’t have the luxury of back-up generation so it’s critical that in Port Lincoln as the largest town in the region can keep the lights on.

“People of Eyre Peninsula have been badly let down by the Weatherill Government’s failed energy policies.

“Since the closure of the Port Augusta Power Station, the Eyre Peninsula and West Coast have been plagued by power black-outs and sky high electricity prices.

“The viability of many businesses have been placed at risk by power crisis that has gripped the Eyre Peninsula.

“I would like to thank the service crews for the work they undertake to restore power during often difficult conditions they have confronted during power black-outs

“But I also want answers from the Weatherill Government and the power companies about the long term maintenance program for electricity infrastructure on the Eyre Peninsula.

“It is particularly concerning that the closure of the Hazelwood Power Station in Victoria will make the situation worse.”
