South Australia’s brain drain accelerating

South Australia’s brain drain accelerating

“South Australia has suffered a surge of people leaving the state as limited job opportunities drive people interstate in search of greater opportunity,” said Shadow Minister for Investment and Trade Tim Whetstone.
Yesterday’s ABS figures show South Australia had 27,467 people move interstate whilst 21,580 migrated to South Australia, resulting in a net loss of 5887 people in the 12 months to March.
“South Australia’s net population loss interstate is now almost double the 10-year average of 3,480 and directly related to an unemployment rate that spiked over 8 per cent last year,” said Mr Whetstone.
“These figures are a stark illustration of the human impact of the Weatherill Government’s failed economic policies.
“Too many South Australians are forced to leave their home and family and head interstate in search of steady work.
“Since Labor came to power in 2002, South Australia has lost almost 45,000 people interstate in net terms.
“High net interstate migration is also the reason South Australia’s population growth was less than half the national average in the last 12 months.
“Young people are the future of our State and the State Liberals will focus on addressing the population loss from South Australia through easing cost pressures for SA businesses and backing new businesses, innovation and industries, and in turn, growing the economy and creating jobs.”
