Labor Government is spinning its wheels on tourism

Shadow Minister for Tourism

Labor Government is spinning its wheels on tourism

Data released today by Tourism Research Australia (TRA) shows that South Australia was the only state to record a decrease in domestic visitor nights for the year ended March 2016.

In a further indictment of this tired, spent State Labor Government the number of domestic tourism nights spent in South Australia is lower than it was in 2003 and 2004.

South Australia had over 640,000 less domestic visitor nights when comparing figures released today to the year ended December 2004.

“The Minister owes an explanation as to why the number of visitor nights spent in South Australia is still below what we had 12 years ago,” said Shadow Minister for Tourism, David Ridgway.

“While the Weatherill Government is happy to pump up its tyres comparing the quarter to quarter results, the long term trend is telling a different story.

“The long term trend shows that the Weatherill Government has been spinning its wheels for the past decade when it comes to tourism.

“While the State Liberals welcome the marginal increase in visitor numbers and expenditure, the data raises serious questions around the effectiveness of the Weatherill Government’s tourism policies.”

TRA data released earlier this month also showed that despite an increase in the number of international visitor nights spent in South Australia, the most recent data was still 700,000 visitor nights below levels in 2013.

“South Australia’s domestic and international visitor nights as a proportion of the national total have been trending down for over a decade,” said Mr Ridgway.

“The fact of the matter is the Weatherill Government is not growing our tourism economy as fast as the rest of the nation.

“This is yet another key economic indicator that the Weatherill Government has let South Australia fall behind the pack.”
