Government urged to continue efforts to raise awareness about suicide in SA
The Legislative Council has unanimously passed a motion to encourage the efforts of community organisations who are already working hard to prevent suicide and urge the Weatherill Labor Government to increase the support in this area through the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist.
Liberal Spokesman for Suicide Prevention, the Hon. John Dawkins MLC moved the motion in the Upper House to heighten awareness about suicide and suicide prevention in South Australia.
“The motion I moved in State Parliament builds on the previous State Liberal Party’s work to emphasise awareness and reinforces our commitment to support organisations that provide services to the sector, said Mr Dawkins.
Unfortunately there has been an increase of deaths caused by suicide over the last 10 years. According to recent ABS Data in 2004 there were 178 deaths caused by suicide compared to 197 deaths caused by suicide in 2012.
“These figures are of great concern and the motion urged the State Labor Government to build on the work of the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist by increasing support to develop suicide prevention networks in South Australia,” said Liberal Spokesperson for Suicide Prevention John Dawkins.
“The State Liberal Party has recognised the need to reduce deaths caused by suicide and created the first ever suicide prevention portfolio in 2012.
“In 2011 the State Liberal Party through Mr Dawkins and the Member for Adelaide, Ms Rachel Sanderson MP moved motions in Parliament to lead the State Labor Government to develop and implement the South Australian Suicide Prevention Strategy.
“I have been involved with suicide prevention for many years and I commend the efforts of the community organisations who deal with suicide prevention or assist families bereaved by suicide”, said Mr Dawkins.
“Suicide doesn’t discriminate, it can affect any family at any time.”
