SA Liberals acknowledge World Suicide Prevention Day

Since 2003, World Suicide Prevention Day has drawn the broader public’s attention to one of the largest causes of premature and unnecessary death.

In South Australia alone, deaths attributed to suicide are 67 per cent higher than that of our annual road toll. The figures are simply devastating and that is why the South Australian Liberals are committing $350,000 per annum to assist community groups in focussing on face-to-face contact with those affected.

“Community organisations are at the coal face of this issue and it is important that they receive the resources they need to combat this important and ever present concern,” Liberal Leader Isobel Redmond said.

“The South Australian Liberals are committed to providing an approach focussed on education, early intervention, communication and reporting. With one in four people now suffering from a mental health issue during their lifetime, it has never been more important to provide adequate support to turn the tide.

“Face to face contact with those affected is incredibly important in trying to stem the distress and helplessness individuals can feel. Ensuring that both metropolitan and rural community members have the training to identify the warning signs of individuals contemplating self-harm or suicide is crucial.

“Working with experienced groups in our community to ensure our approach is consistently effective is essential when you’re talking about a potentially lifesaving service. There are many other groups who are ready to act alongside those already on the ground,” Member of the Legislative Council John Dawkins said.

“This approach is far more effective than waiting for those individuals to find their way into the primary healthcare system. The sad reality is that many will not make it that far before taking their own lives.

“It is imperative that governments have a proactive policy in this area – a wait and see approach is potentially devastating, not only for the individual, but for those around them.

“With today being World Suicide Prevention Day, we want South Australians to know that if elected, a Redmond Liberal Government will introduce a targeted and proactive approach to this devastating issue which would have a positive impact on communities in metropolitan, regional and rural South Australia.”
