Libs Suicide Prevention Policy gets big tick

The South Australian Liberals are pleased to see its community leading suicide prevention policy significantly endorsed by the National Health Commission’s 2012 Report Card, ‘A Contributing Life’, released yesterday.

Recommendation 10 of the Commission’s report shows governments around Australia need to effectively partner with community organisations to set up early intervention programs in suicide prevention.

According to the report, the programs should be:

“…coordinated, community based, culturally appropriate, early response systems and suicide prevention programs.”

The State Liberal team is committed to providing local and hardworking community groups with the resources they need to act as effective community gatekeepers and ultimately save lives.

“The recommendations of the nation’s first mental health report card clearly show that the State Liberals have been on the right track with our suicide prevention strategy,” Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Suicide Prevention John Dawkins said.

“It is a ringing endorsement of our hard work in this policy area and shows our ongoing commitment to lowering the number of avoidable fatalities caused by this devastating issue.

“Working hand-in-hand with non-government organisations in our community is a key aspect of our policy and this new report shows just how integral the Liberals core approach to reducing suicide really is.”
