James Stevens was elected as the federal Member for Sturt in 2019 and was re-elected for a second term at the 2022 election. He serves in the Shadow Ministry as the Shadow Assistant Minister for Government Waste Reduction.

The electorate of Sturt covers the eastern and north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide, with 200,000 residents stretching across 7 local councils and 8 state electorates. 

Locally, James has delivered a variety of substantial investments in key local projects including road upgrades, sporting and recreational infrastructure, environmental and heritage preservation, and community and volunteer support. 

He is passionate about standing up for Adelaide and South Australia in Canberra, particularly fighting for the interests of our naval shipbuilding industry, the Murray Darling basin, and Commonwealth infrastructure funding. 

James serves on the Council of the National Library of Australia. He is the Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Italy, the Parliamentary Friends of Greece, the Parliamentary Friends of Firearm Safety, and the Parliamentary Friends of the Space Industry. 

He is a member of the Marden Secondary College School Council, the Norwood Football Club, the Payneham RSL and the Burnside and Campbelltown Rotary Clubs. 

Before entering Parliament, James served as the Chief of Staff to the South Australian Premier, Steven Marshall. Prior to that, he worked at one of Australia’s largest wool processors and exporters, Michell Wool, in the role of General Manager of the textile division, having responsibility for the production and sale of yarn, fabric and garments, with supply chains through the Indo-Pacific and customers across Europe, North America and Asia. 

James attended St Peter’s College, before completing a Bachelor of Commerce followed by a Master of International Trade and Development at the University of Adelaide.  

James lives locally in Norwood, in the Sturt electorate, with his partner Alex.
